The inspiration for the BrakeBuddy® came about in 1996 as a result of an RV's inability to stop quickly when towing a dinghy vehicle. The added weight of the dinghy vehicle would cause the motorhome's brakes to overheat, causing brake failure and potential accidents. Many states and Canadian provinces were enforcing laws requiring breakaway systems and minimal stopping distances on the towing industry. Also in 1996, the only supplemental braking options available came in the form of hard to install, permanent braking systems. The answer to these issues came in the form of the world's first portable, supplemental braking system, the BrakeBuddy.
